Moving Advice from
Surrey Removal Company

If you're moving apartments or moving to a new house from Surrey to Hertfordshire or anywhere else, there are several things you can do to help your move go smoothly with a minimal of stress.

When booking your removal company

Book your removal company well in advance to ensure that your date is available. Before you call or email, make a note of all the large items that you wish to move and add some allowance for extra boxes, etc.

Start packing items you won't need as soon as you know you're moving - or better still sell, give away or throw away items that you won't need after you've moved. As the move approaches, buy less frozen food and start eating those tins of soup that have been in the cupboard for months.

As you pack boxes, write on them (ideally on at least one side plus the top what's in them), this saves having to unpack every single box just to find that DVD that you missed the last 10 minutes of.

If a parking permit is necessary either at the pick-up or drop-off point, then arrange that as early as possible.

A fortnight before the move

Ensure you have enough boxes and buy plenty of packing material - tape, marker pens to label boxes, etc.

Organise your post to be forwarded to your new address and make sure you've cancelled your phone, electricity, etc.

If you have children consider arranging a baby-sitter for the day of your move. Even with a well-planned moved and a professional removal company, the day of the move can still be stressful and young children particularly tend not to understand the requirements of the day. Consider what will happen with any pets too.

One or two days before you move

Pack essential items in a clearly distinguishable box or bag (e.g. a box that's a different colour to the other boxes) - such as medicines, tooth brush, loo roll, water, snacks, a towel (which reminds me, Don't Panic at this point).

Pack everything you won't need the next day. You can always pack the contents of wardrobes or movable cupboards into boxes, then put those boxes back in the wardrobe, so that they are easy to take out, but can be transported inside the wardrobe.

Moving Day

Finish packing the essentials into the illuminous pink glow-in-the-dark box you found, that you thought would stand out most clearly from the other boxes.

Disconnect the cooker, turn off the water and if you're leaving a fridge behind, ensure you turn it off and leave the door open.

Read the electric and gas meters.

Once you arrive in your new house or flat then you may wish to ask the removal company to put all the large items of furniture into the appropriate rooms they're going to be in, particularly the beds and items for the kitchen.

Take things steady once the move is completed - treat yourselves to a meal out and don't feel that you have to complete everything straight away, relax and enjoy your new home.
